Position: Business Unit & R&D Controller
This role is responsible for overseeing all financial activities, ensuring accurate financial reporting, managing budgets, and implementing financial controls of both Business Unit & R&D functions. This role bridges finance and business unit strategy, ensuring financial sustainability and value creation within the business unit and R&D department. This role supports the Malaysia Business Unit head, global R&D head, and reports to the Global BU controller and matrix to the Malaysia Country finance Director.
ResponsibilitiesFinancial Planning and Budgeting
Develop and manage annual budgets for the business unit and R&D projects.
Monitor budget adherence and recommend adjustments as necessary.
Support forecasting activities, ensuring alignment with corporate financial goals.
Financial Reporting and Analysis
Prepare periodic financial reports, including variance analysis (budget vs. actual).
Analyze key performance indicators (KPIs) and identify trends or risks.
Provide detailed cost analysis for R&D activities, including project-specific expenses.
Cost Management
Track and control operational costs and R&D expenditures.
Evaluate the profitability of projects, including return on investment (ROI) for R&D initiatives.
Ensure compliance with cost allocation methodologies for shared services.
Strategic Support
Collaborate with leadership to evaluate the financial feasibility of new projects or product developments.
Provide financial insights including contribution margin analysis to support strategic planning and decision-making.
Assess risks and develop mitigation strategies related to financial performance.
Compliance and Governance
Ensure compliance with financial regulations and company policies.
Oversee internal and external audits related to the business unit and R&D.
Maintain proper documentation and controls for financial transactions.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Act as a financial partner for R&D and Business unit leaders.
Provide training and guidance on financial processes to non-financial stakeholders.
Support innovation initiatives by managing R&D grants or subsidies (if applicable).
Tools and Systems
Use ERP systems, financial software, or analytics tools for efficient reporting and forecasting.
Drive process improvement and automation in financial management practices.
QualificationsBachelor's Degree/ Master's degree or professional qualification in Accounting/Finance or related discipline.
Minimum 5 years of finance experience in operations, Business unit or R&D environment in a multinational manufacturing / research industry or supply chain environment.
Business savvy with good knowledge of financial concepts and principles.
Strong proficiency in business intelligence, data visualization tools & Excel.
Effective communication and stakeholder management.
Preferred Qualification
Member of ACCA / CIMA or equivalent.
