Job Overview:
The School Educational Counsellor plays a pivotal role in guiding and preparing students for their future academic and career pathways. This includes providing personalized support to help students identify their ambitions, strengths, and interests, and aligning them with appropriate higher education programs or career opportunities. The counsellor will also assist with the application process, scholarship opportunities, and career planning, ensuring students are equipped to make informed decisions about their future.
Key Responsibilities:Career and Educational Guidance:
-Assess students' academic performance, skills, interests, and career aspirations to provide tailored advice on suitable higher education programs and career options.
-Conduct career assessments, interest inventories, and aptitude tests to help students discover and understand their potential career paths.
Preparation for Higher Education:
-Provide information and support for university applications, including course selection, admission criteria, deadlines, and preparation for interviews.
-Advise on scholarship opportunities, financial aid, and other funding options for higher education.
Development of Individual Education Plans (IEP):
-Collaborate with students, parents, and teachers to develop personalized academic plans that align with each student's career goals and ambitions.
-Monitor student progress and revise educational plans as necessary.
Career Exploration:
-Organize workshops, seminars, and guest speaker sessions with professionals from various industries to provide real-world insights and career exposure.
-Facilitate internships, job shadowing, or volunteering opportunities to allow students to gain practical experience in fields of interest.
Counselling and Mentoring:
-Offer one-on-one counselling to help students manage the stress of academic pressures and decision-making regarding their future.
-Provide emotional support and mentorship to students as they navigate the transition from school to higher education or career paths.
Collaboration and Communication:
-Work closely with teachers, parents, and external organizations (such as universities and career centers) to ensure students receive well-rounded support.
-Build and maintain relationships with higher education institutions to stay updated on admission requirements and new academic programs.
Student Portfolio Development:
-Guide students in building strong academic and extracurricular profiles, including resumes, personal statements, and recommendation letters for university applications.
-Provide support for students preparing for standardized tests such as the SAT, ACT, A-levels, or other relevant qualifications.
Data Management and Reporting:
-Maintain accurate records of student progress, applications, and outcomes.
-Analyze data and trends to improve counselling services and offer data-driven recommendations to school leadership.
Qualifications:
-Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, or a related field.
-Experience: Minimum 1-2 years of experience in educational counselling or a related role, preferably in a school or academic setting.
-Knowledge: Strong understanding of local and international higher education systems, university admission processes, and career development strategies.
