A Commis Chef assists the Demi Chef and Chef de Partie, with a primary goal of learning all kitchen areas through rotation, typically spending about six months at each station. Responsibilities include food preparation and basic cooking under supervision, rotating through sections like sauce, vegetables, fish, and butchery. Duties also involve supporting meal prep, receiving deliveries, and managing stock rotation. This role requires strong organizational skills and provides hands-on learning opportunities for career growth in the kitchen.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Provide professional support to their respective Demi Chef or any other senior ranking kitchen staff whenever deemed necessary.
Prepare the ingredients as directed by their respected section leaders.
Perform daily mise-en-place according to daily requirements and standard recipes.
Handle deliveries and stock rotation, keeping the storage areas clean and tidy.
Assist with proper storage of stocks and ingredients.
Help with cooking, preparation, and plating as needed.
Adhere to cost-effective standard procedures for daily kitchen operation and comply with the standard operating procedures of the kitchen.
Maintain efficient and professional workflow, including working/helping with other sections within the kitchen/restaurant.
Strictly adhere to the health and safety guidelines of the restaurant.
Ensure personal and kitchen hygiene at all times, maintaining cleanliness and tidiness during both mise en place and service times.
Assist colleagues to complete their tasks as needed.
Provide support and assistance to superiors in the department.
Ensure that the work area is always clean, neat, and organized.
Be prepared to work overtime to accommodate busy periods in the restaurant.
Complete tasks as assigned and be willing to work overtime within reasonable means as necessary.
Work together with staff on the same level, training and retraining on technical skills and communication skills.
Comply with grooming, hygiene, and uniform standards.
Keep oneself up to date with industry knowledge and proactively try to improve work-related skills.
Utilize available learning & development resources to develop skills and perform jobs efficiently and effectively.
Develop and maintain positive working relationships with others.
Support the team to reach common goals.
