Job Purpose
We are seeking candidates to provide a professional counselling service that supports students, staff and parents at the Alice Smith Secondary Campus in accordance with the Codes of Practice and Ethics recommended by the British Association for Counsellors (BACP) and the Board of Counsellors of Malaysia.
Responsibilities/Duties:
Adhere to the school's policies and procedures.
All staff are responsible for ensuring that safeguarding is central to everything we do, adopting a whole-school approach.
Please refer to the Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy available on our website.The duties and responsibilities of this post may vary from time to time according to the changing demands of the school and whilst it is recognised that there are many facets to the job, as a minimum expectation the postholder will:
assess the specific psychological needs of students and provide the relevant service as required including, when appropriate, group and/or family therapy;
liaise with staff in order to work in the best interest of students;
hold regular meetings with parents of students who are using the service, when appropriate;
provide consultation and guidance where a child protection issue or other such issues arise;
provide support and guidance to teaching staff thereby enabling them to better identify and support students with emotional and well-being challenges;
establish effective liaison with staff with regards to student referral in respect of mental health and counselling issues;
develop, implement, monitor and evaluate workshops around wellbeing and mental health for students in response to trends and common issues;
support teaching staff in their pastoral role;
develop and implement policies and procedures which govern the counselling service;
maintain appropriate records and ensure confidentiality is maintained in all aspects of work unless there is a safeguarding concern;
establish, maintain and monitor appropriate administrative systems with regards to student referral and to provide termly quantitative data reports which also review and evaluate;
actively work with other school counsellors to ensure effective school counselling provision;
remain accessible and make an effort to know every student for whom they are responsible;
attend regular clinical supervision as recommended by the BACP.
Building Relationships with Parents and the Wider Community
The Counsellor will:
consult, facilitate and maintain communication with parents;
demonstrate a consistent record of positive parental involvement in wellbeing and a generally high level of satisfaction;
lead and assist in relevant parent workshops and training;
actively involve themselves in communication with relevant global communities of practice;
develop supportive connections with other professionals in the community.
Managing own Performance and Professional Development
The Counsellor will be able to:
keep up-to-date and implement latest developments, practices, and procedures related to counselling, child protection and safeguarding children;
improve her/his counselling skills through evaluating her/his own practice in relation to students' progress, targets and inspection/review evidence;
understand professional responsibilities in relation to school policies and procedures;
participate very effectively in Professional Growth and Learning (PGL), taking responsibility for her/his own professional development;
acknowledge the value of auditing and updating professional knowledge and skills and the application of learning technologies to their professional practice.
Managing and Developing Staff and Other Adults
The Counsellor will:
interact on a professional level with academic and administrative colleagues to establish productive working relationships;
provide clear feedback, good support and sound advice to others on pastoral matters;
analyse their own practice and understand how improvements can be made;
have highly developed interpersonal skills which allow her/him to be effective in a wide range of situations;
lead and assist on staff training regarding relevant aspects of child & adult development.
Managing Resources
The Counsellor will:
know how to plan and prioritise her/his own time and actions effectively;
use the school's information management system to support sharing of information;
ensure that the additional resources and opportunities offered by the school's location in Malaysia are used to their best advantage.

Selection Criteria:
Master / Degree in Counselling with specialisation in counselling.
Registered with the Board of Counsellor Malaysia (Lembaga Kaunselor Malaysia) and possess a valid practising licence.
Experience of supporting students across different age ranges (children to young adults) will be an advantage
Familiar with Google Applications.
Exposure to different therapeutic modalities such as play therapy, sand tray therapy and art therapy are welcomed.
