Job Summary:
The Automation Engineer is responsible for implementing and maintaining automated systems and equipment within a manufacturing or industrial environment. This role involves optimizing production processes, ensuring equipment reliability, and driving continuous improvement initiatives. The engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of automation systems and contribute to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the production operations.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Automation System Design and Development:
Develop and implement automated systems, including programmable logic controllers (PLCs), human-machine interfaces (HMIs), robotics, sensors, and other control systems.
Collaborate with the design team to create functional specifications and system architecture for automation projects.
Develop and debug control programs, ensuring proper sequencing, interlocks, alarms, and error handling.
Equipment Integration:
Integrate new automation equipment with existing manufacturing systems while ensuring compatibility and optimal performance.
Collaborate with equipment vendors and suppliers to define technical requirements and specifications.
Troubleshooting and Maintenance:
Diagnose and resolve equipment malfunctions, process issues, and automation failures in a timely manner.
Perform regular maintenance, calibration, and upgrades of automated systems to ensure continuous operation and prevent downtime.
Process Optimization:
Identify opportunities for process improvement, efficiency enhancement, and cost reduction through automation and equipment upgrades.
Analyze production data and collaborate with data analysts to make informed decisions for process optimization.
Quality and Compliance:
Ensure that automated systems and equipment meet quality standards, regulatory requirements, and safety guidelines.
Participate in validation activities, documentation, and audits to ensure compliance with industry standards.
Training and Documentation:
Develop training materials and provide training to operators and maintenance staff on the proper use and maintenance of automated systems.
Maintain accurate documentation, including system schematics, control logic, maintenance procedures, and troubleshooting guides.
Project Management:
Manage automation projects from concept to implementation, including timeline development, resource allocation, and budget tracking.
Coordinate with cross-functional teams, including production, engineering, and IT, to ensure successful project execution.
Continuous Improvement:
Stay updated with the latest automation technologies, trends, and industry best practices.
Actively participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance equipment reliability, performance, and efficiency.
Minimum & Preferred Qualifications and Experience:
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, automation, or related engineering field.
Strong knowledge of automation systems, PLC programming, HMI design, robotics, and control systems.
Experience with industrial communication protocols (e.g., Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus).
Proficiency in CAD software for creating schematics and layouts.
Familiarity with safety regulations and compliance standards in manufacturing environments.
Analytical mindset with problem-solving skills to troubleshoot complex automation issues.
Strong communication skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams and vendors.
Project management experience, including planning, resource management, and documentation.
Willingness to adapt to evolving technologies and learn new skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
Physical Requirements/Work Environment:
This position primarily works in an office environment. It requires frequent sitting, standing, and walking. Daily use of a computer and other computing and digital devices is required. May stand for extended periods when facilitating meetings or walking in the facilities. Some local travel is necessary, so the ability to operate a motor vehicle and maintain a valid driver's license is required.
