The Senior PMO Manager is a role within UNM's project management team, responsible for supporting the planning, execution, and monitoring of various projects across the university. This is a 5-year contract position designed to contribute to the efficient and effective delivery of projects as part of UNM's overarching strategy.
The Senior PMO Manager is a senior leadership position responsible for overseeing the overall management and strategic direction of PMO. This role involves leading and coordinating the successful execution of projects across UNM, ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and aligned with UNM's strategic goals. The role will coach a team of project managers, provide guidance on project methodologies and best practices, and ensure that PMO's processes and tools are optimised for maximum efficiency and effectiveness.
This role will collaborate with MB members, strategy owners, and project teams to define project priorities, set clear expectations, and ensure the delivery of value through structured project management. Additionally, this role involves continuous improvement of project management practices, ensuring projects are executed in a way that supports UNM's objectives and enhances overall performance.
Job Responsibilities:
Co-lead PMO team, setting direction and providing strategic guidance for the effective execution of projects across UNM.
Define and implement PMO methodologies, processes, and frameworks to ensure consistency and alignment with UNM's goals.
Provide ongoing coaching, training, and development to project managers within the project community.
Oversee strategic project portfolios, ensuring projects are properly prioritised based on business objectives and available resources.
Monitor the status of all active projects, ensuring they are on track and manage any risks or issues that arise.
Continuously assess and improve PMO practices to optimise project delivery, identify efficiencies, and ensure PMO adapts to evolving business needs.
Identify and manage project risks, issues, and dependencies, escalating concerns to Project Owners/MBs when necessary.
Support UNM's change management initiatives by ensuring projects are executed in a way that supports smooth transitions and minimises disruption.
Track lessons learned from completed projects and ensure that this knowledge is captured and shared to improve future project delivery.
Serve as the primary point of contact for all project-related communications, ensuring transparency and effective communication among PMO, stakeholders, and project teams.
Job Requirements:
Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Project Management, Engineering, or a related field. Master's Degree in a related field is a plus.
Project Management Certification (e.g., PMP, PgMP, or PRINCE2) required.
At least 13 – 18 years of experience in project management, with a proven track record of successfully managing complex, large-scale projects in a leadership or senior management role. Experience in a PMO environment is essential.
Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage, motivate, and develop a team of project managers and support staff. Demonstrated experience in leading cross-functional teams and managing senior-level stakeholders.
Ability to align project goals with the broader UNM's strategy and prioritise projects based on business needs.
Extensive knowledge of project management methodologies (e.g., Agile, Waterfall, Hybrid), tools (e.g., MS Project/SharePoint/Power BI, JIRA, Smartsheet), and best practices.
Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present complex ideas clearly to MBs and other stakeholders.
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to assess project data and deliver actionable insights for improvements.
Strong business acumen with the ability to think strategically and act tactically.
Highly organised, detail-oriented, and able to advise/manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Collaborative mindset with the ability to foster teamwork and drive cross-functional alignment.
Adaptability and resilience, able to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
