Vendor Technical Oversight:
Act as the technical liaison between the company and SMT vendors to ensure alignment on process requirements and production specifications.
Review and validate vendor manufacturing processes, including stencil design, solder paste application, pick-and-place programming, reflow soldering, and AOI (Automated Optical Inspection) results.
Provide technical guidance and support to vendors on SMT equipment calibration, process optimization, and troubleshooting production issues.
Audit vendor facilities to evaluate SMT equipment capabilities, maintenance practices, and compliance with company standards.
Quality Assurance and Compliance:
Work closely with vendors to ensure adherence to IPC standards (e.g., IPC-A-610) and other industry-specific quality guidelines for SMT assemblies.
Monitor and validate first article inspections, process qualification runs, and mass production quality.
Collaborate with internal engineering and quality teams to address technical issues such as component placement accuracy, solder joint quality, and defect resolution.
Drive continuous improvement initiatives with vendors to reduce defects and improve product yields.
Vendor Relationship Management:
Build and maintain strong working relationships with SMT vendors to foster collaboration and ensure alignment on production goals.
Conduct regular business and technical review meetings with vendors to discuss performance metrics, challenges, and improvement opportunities.
Address and resolve escalated vendor issues, including delivery delays, quality concerns, or technical bottlenecks.
Process Optimization and Cost Management:
Analyze SMT manufacturing processes to identify inefficiencies and propose technical improvements to enhance throughput and reduce cycle times.
Work with vendors to implement cost-saving initiatives, such as alternative material sourcing, process automation, and design-for-manufacturability (DFM) improvements.
Benchmark vendor performance and capabilities to ensure competitive pricing without compromising quality.
Risk Mitigation and Problem Solving:
Lead root cause analyses (RCAs) for SMT production issues and collaborate with vendors to implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs).
Monitor vendor capacity and technical capabilities to proactively address risks related to supply shortages, equipment downtime, or technology obsolescence.
Stay up-to-date on advancements in SMT technology and recommend adoption of innovative solutions to enhance vendor production efficiency.
Collaboration and Communication:
Work closely with internal R&D, engineering, and procurement teams to align on technical requirements and supplier capabilities.
Provide regular updates to stakeholders on vendor performance, technical challenges, and improvement initiatives.
Support new product introductions (NPI) by ensuring vendors are technically capable of meeting design and manufacturing requirements.
How you will stand out:
Bachelor's degree in Electronics Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field.
10+ years of experience in SMT manufacturing, supplier management, or a similar role.
Proficiency in data analysis tools, ERP systems, and manufacturing execution systems (MES).
Proven experience in vendor management, including contract negotiation, performance evaluations, and supply chain optimization.
Deep technical knowledge of SMT processes, including solder paste printing, pick-and-place programming, reflow profiling, wave soldering, and AOI/X-ray inspection techniques.
Familiarity with SMT equipment from leading manufacturers (e.g., ASM, Fuji, Panasonic, or Juki) and related software tools.
Strong understanding of design-for-manufacturability (DFM) principles and experience working with engineering teams on PCB layout optimizations.
Strong technical acumen and ability to analyze complex manufacturing processes.
Leadership and negotiation skills to manage vendor relationships effectively.
Problem-solving mindset with attention to detail and results orientation.
Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration abilities.
Certification in Six Sigma, lean manufacturing, or quality assurance (e.g., IPC certification) is preferred.
Experience working with international vendors and knowledge of global supply chain logistics is preferred.
Knowledge of advanced manufacturing technologies, such as Industry 4.0 solutions, AI-driven inspection tools, and robotics in SMT is preferred.
