Job Purpose:
Lawson Fuses Limited (LFL) is seeking an 'Apprentice Test / Laboratory Technician' for its headquarters located in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.
This is a key role and is required to assist the R&D team in performing a variety of technical product and material tests and measurements within the Lawson Fuses Laboratory.

Lawson Fuses specialises in the design, development, and manufacturing of low voltage, High-Rupturing Capacity (HRC) fuse links and fuse holders.
Applications include electric/electronic capital equipment, utilities, renewable energy, and domestic households.

Incorporated in 1938, LFL is an established British and global brand that operates in the fuse gear market with a focus on design, development, and manufacture of low voltage High Rupture Capacity (HRC) fuse-links and associated fuse holders.
LFL's products are ASTA certified and comply with IEC/BS/ENA standards.
With manufacturing facilities based in the UK and India, LFL's global clientele is spread across several countries.
From 2018, LFL is part of Lucy Group, which operates in multiple sectors including Power Distribution, Smart Lighting, Fuse Gear, and Real Estate.
Job Dimensions:
This is a full-time role based in our Newcastle upon Tyne plant with four days on site and one day attending a local college studying a related qualification.
This role reports to the R&D Manager and will work closely with R&D Engineers including Materials, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineers.
The role will assist the R&D team in implementing product roadmap strategies and providing technical support for internal teams in the UK and India.
Key Activities of this Role:
Pressure testing of ceramic barrels – understand expected pressure, record results
Tensile testing – crush testing and pull testing of ceramic barrels, fuse assemblies, and general sub-assemblies
Thermal shock – heating of ceramic barrels and controlled placement into cold water, and dye penetration testing to review microscopic cracks in ceramic
Set up, assembly, and operation of electrical tests to validate the operation of a fuseEach of the above tests require a formal report to be written in MS Word for circulation to internal and external stakeholdersUnderstand and utilise various pieces of electrical/electronic equipment including volt meters, current meters, current sensors, thermocouples, and electronic thermometers
Understand technical standards
Read and understand technical drawings generated with AutoCAD
Clean, perform preventive maintenance, and assist with repair of all test equipment
Use MS Excel to record data and control documents such as calibration
Key Accountabilities:
Comply with health and safety policies and procedures, risk assessments, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), manual handling, and emergency procedures.
Maintain excellent housekeeping, in accordance with organisational Standard Procedures
Order and control stocks of laboratory materials where required
Prepare for and perform laboratory experiments, tests, or tasks following specified methodologies to provide reliable, accurate data
Demonstrate technical competence in the use of specified instruments and equipment
Report faults and seek diagnostic advice to maintain equipment in good working order, including calibration where required
Complete documentation proficiently
Keep accurate records of laboratory work undertaken and results
Contribute to the preparation of reports
Use simple statistical techniques for data presentation and evaluation
Demonstrate problem-solving techniques including identification of sources of error and how they can be reduced
Use standard software packages and applications e.g.
Microsoft Office suite
Identify relevant information from scientific sources to contribute to solutions
Evaluate data, recognise, and call attention to failed tests.
Qualifications, Experience & Skills:
Minimum:
Good GCSE or A-level results (Depending on age)
Willingness to learn
Understanding of the importance of following health and safety guidelines
Some computer skills with Microsoft Office
