Your new role
We invite applications for the role of Business Development Manager. This pivotal position plays a crucial role in securing attractive, long-term returns from the commercialisation of Curtin's intellectual property. The focus of the role is to promote awareness to University researchers, the value of commercialising intellectual property, and to liaise with industry and venture capital organisations to promote the merits of Curtin technology. The role undertakes the initial negotiation of commercial arrangements, providing the basis for securing contract and licence agreements with prospective commercial partners.
Key Responsibilities
Promote awareness within the University of the value of commercialising intellectual property including coordinating and delivering presentations on intellectual property and commercialisation to University staff and students.
Identify University intellectual property with commercial merit and help researchers to progress towards commercialisation.
Develop relationships with leading Curtin researchers working in fields relevant to business and investors.
Make recommendations to Curtin Malaysia Research Innovation and Commercialisation (CMRIC) Committee on commercialisation strategies for research outcomes, including investment, licensing, patenting and formation of spin-out companies.
Liaise with industry, venture capital organisations and the investment community generally to promote the merits of Curtin technology.
Directly, or through third parties, prepare business plans and/or information memoranda for technologies to be commercialised.
Secure funding for projects being commercialised.
Undertake initial negotiation of appropriate commercial arrangements with interested parties, including collaborative research contracts, license agreements and assignment agreements in consultation with Curtin Legal Services, the Director and external legal support as required.
Research and prepare reports and other documentation for and on behalf of the Director, where appropriate. This includes, but is not restricted to, the Curtin Malaysia Research Innovation and Commercialisation Centre (CMRIC) Committee, the Board of Directors (BOD) and companies in which Curtin has a significant shareholding.
About you
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Business or a relevant field (MBA preferred for candidates with degrees in other fields).
Minimum 5 years of work experience as a Business Development Manager.
Extensive experience in commercialisation.
Skills and Knowledge:
Demonstrated commercial acumen with a proven record of delivering business outcomes.
Strong skills in business planning and negotiation.
Significant networking experience in the business and commercialisation community.
Sound understanding of intellectual property protection.
Familiarity with commercial law relevant to this role.
Ability to interpret complex legal documents.
Highly effective communication and interpersonal skills.
Knowledge of the research and innovation system in Malaysia.
